Weather Discussion

What happened to fall? Hello, I'm CBS 42 Chief Meteorologist, David Sawyer. Well, here are a couple of reasons for the increase in our temperatures for the next several days. First, of all, you will notice a big blue "H" over the eastern U.S. on the weather map above. This is an area of high pressure that continues to dominate our weather in the eastern half of our country.
High pressure systems are associated with sinking air. Sinking air does not allow the air to rise and form rain clouds as a general rule. This area of high pressure has been anchored along the eastern third of the U.S. for almost the entire year. As a result, this non-changing weather pattern is a major reason for our historic drought across central Alabama and the southeast for that matter.
Additionally, because of our drought, our soil moisture is devastatingly low. Therefore, our plants and soil have no moisture to contribute via evaporation to the atmosphere. This continues to make our air exceptionally dry.
Finally, just like a desert, dry air heats and cools quickly. As a result, we will continue to have warm days with daytime heating from the sun. Once the sun sets, the dry air cools fairly quickly resulting in comfortable temperatures overnight.
Since this same, stubborn high pressure system will continue to dominate our weather pattern for the next week, expect very little chances of rain for the next week or so.
It's going to take a significant push of chilly Canadian air to push this high pressure system out of the way to allow fall weather to return to central Alabama. I'll let you know when I see this coming. Until then, we will keep watching the weather maps for you!
Thanks for visiting the CBS 42 Weather Blog! Have a nice weekend!
