Severe Weather Threat Tomorrow

A rapid warm up will begin our work week. But the trade off could mean severe weather. Hello, I'm Meteorologist, Lauren Whisenhunt.

Breezy, Southerly winds (5-15 mph) will continue to pump in lots of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Therefore, expect well above average temperatures today with highs near 70. Typically this time of year, daytime highs are near 54 with overnight lows around 33. We started off this morning with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms, but we will continue to see a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon as a disturbance moves through the area.

Tonight will be quite mild with lows only dropping to near 60. Expect a slight chance of a shower overnight under mostly cloudy skies.

On Tuesday, temperatures will soar to near record levels. Mid 70's will be possible across the CBS 42 viewing area. Combine that unusual warmth with plenty of moisture and the scene is set for some severe weather across central Alabama as another storm system cranks up over the Southern Plains dragging an attendant cold front. As the colder air behind this system collides with the warm, moist air we will have in place over central Alabama, there is a potential for Severe and possible Tornadic Thunderstorms to develop out of this system's associated cold front.

The Storm Prediction Center has put parts of Northwest Alabama under a Moderate Risk for Severe Weather and the remainder of Central Alabama is under a Slight Risk. The main threats right now look to be damaging winds, large hail and we can't rule out the possibility for an isolated tornado. Severe thunderstorms will be possibly, mainly after 2pm through the overnight hours.

We will continue to watch the development of this situation.
