Severe Weather Threat

A strong storm system combined with well above average temperatures and plenty of moisture will set the scene for severe weather. Hello, I'm Meteorologist, Lauren Whisenhunt.

Warm southerly breezes will cause Monday night to be very mild with lows only dropping to near 60. Expect a slight chance of a shower overnight under mostly cloudy skies.

This morning, we started off with mostly cloudy skies and patchy areas of fog with overnight lows in the low 60's. Today, temperatures will soar to near record levels into the Mid 70's. The record high temperature for February 5th is 76 degrees set back in 1927. Combine the unusual warmth with plenty of moisture and the scene is set for some severe weather across central Alabama as another storm system cranks up over the Southern Plains dragging an attendant cold front. As the colder air behind this system collides with the warm, moist air we will have in place over central Alabama, there is a potential for Severe and possible Tornadic Thunderstorms to develop out of this system's associated cold front. Right now, it looks like the main severe weather threat will be late this afternoon through early Wednesday morning.

If you plan to vote in the Super Tuesday Primary, get your vote in early during the day. That way you will not have to contend with any potential severe weather that will come later on Tuesday into Tuesday evening.

The Storm Prediction Center has Northwest Alabama under a Moderate Risk for Severe Weather and the remainder of Central Alabama is under a Slight Risk.

Thunderstorms that develop during the afternoon hours on Tuesday will be isolated but could produce very dangerous weather conditions including tornadoes.

Then, as we head into Tuesday night, the cold front will bring a line of strong to severe thunderstorms that will likely have damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, possible hail, heavy rain and frequent lightning.

Please stay with CBS 42 as we monitor this severe weather potential on Tuesday.
