Latest Drought Information

Periodic rainfall during the past several weeks has gradually eased the drought conditions plaguing Central Alabama. The D4 Exceptional Drought area(the brown shaded region on the map above) has now receded into extreme northeast Alabama. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor now indicates that no part of Central Alabama is in D4 Exceptional Drought status.

Nonetheless, Extreme drought conditions persist across much of Central Alabama.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor now has D2 Severe(orange shading on the map above) to D3 Extreme Drought(red shading) conditions north and east of a line from near Vernon to Moundville to Magnolia to Hayneville to Opelika.

Remaining areas to the south and west are in D0 Abnormally Dry(yellow shading on the map above) to D1 Moderate Drought conditions(peach colored shading).

At the CBS 42 studios located in Birmingham, 11.04 inches of rain has fallen since January 1st. Despite this encouraging amout of rain, however, we still actually remain below normal for total precipitation. Normally, we should have 11.56 inches of precipitation so far this year. Of course, we should be thankful for the rain we've received so far.

Hopefully, this trend of near normal rainfall will help fill our water reservoirs and replenish the water table.
