Average Temperatures Return this Afternoon

Bundle up this morning. But average temperatures will return this afternoon. Hello, I'm Meteorologist, Lauren Whisenhunt.

The Arctic chill left it's mark across central Alabama Thursday morning with Tuscaloosa tying a record low temperature of 15 degrees. Elsewhere, readings in the teens made for a very cold commute to work and school.

Fortunately, the Arctic air is moving out as we head into our weekend. Expect plenty of sunshine and a southerly flow to warm our temperatures up this afternoon into the lower 50s. This is where daytime highs should be for this time of year. Typically, daytime highs for the first half of January are in the lower 50's with overnight lows in the low to mid 30's.

Tonight will be cold but not as frigid as the last couple of nights. Lows will drop to the low to mid 30s by early Saturday morning. Be sure to bring your pets inside tonight!

For the weekend, the warming trend will continue with highs tomorrow reaching the upper 50s under partly cloudy skies. It will be even milder on Sunday with temperatures in the mid 60s Sunday afternoon.

Our next chance of rain looks to arrive by Tuesday of next week. Unfortunately, we ended 2007 with a huge rain deficit. Central Alabama enters the New Year lacking between 25 and 35 inches of rainfall!

As a result, the exceptional drought continues as does the desperate hope for rain.
