Thunderstorms in the Forecast

Well above average temperatures will be accompanied by a chance of thunderstorms later today. Hello, I'm Meteorologist, Lauren Whisenhunt.

Typically for this time of year, daytime highs are near 52 degrees. However, that is not going to be the case today when our overnight low didn't even get that chilly! Lows ranged from the upper 50's to lower 60's across Central Alabama this morning. Expect temperatures to soar once again to near record levels in the middle 70s by this afternoon. The record high temperature in Birmingham is 74 degrees. We may be setting a new record with this surge of warm air out ahead of the next cold front heading our way. Winds will be breezy today out of the South 10-20 mph with even higher gusts.

A LAKE WIND ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON UNTIL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. A LAKE WIND ADVISORY INDICATES THAT WINDS WILL CAUSE ROUGH CHOP ON AREA LAKES. SMALL BOATS WILL BE ESPECIALLY PRONE TO CAPSIZING.

Our best chance of rain will be right along the front, which will cross Central Alabama late in the day on Tuesday into Tuesday night. Although some thunderstorms may be strong, we don't anticipate a widespread chance of severe weather. It looks like the best chance for strong storms will mainly be to the North of 1-20/59 where the best instability will be. The main threat right now with this system looks to be gusty winds.

On Wednesday, this same cold front will stall near us keeping enough moisture in place to produce a slight chance of a few showers. However, along this stalled frontal system, another batch of energy will generate a strong low pressure system near the Gulf Coast.

As this low pressure pulls more warm, moist and unstable air our way, there will be an heightened chance of strong to severe thunderstorms during the day on Thursday.

Stay with CBS 42 as we monitor these storms for you.

Right now, the weekend looks to turn significantly colder. We'll keep you posted on that as well.
