A Cold Rain Event

Grab an umbrella as you head out the door because widespread rain is likely today. Hello, I'm Meteorologist, Lauren Whisenhunt.

An area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico will continue to pump lots of moisture our way. Expect our rain chances to increase throughout the day today. Rainfall amounts expected to be generally 0.75" or less. Daytime highs will be on the chilly side in the mid 40s with cloudy skies and east winds 5-10 mph. This afternoon, we could see some sleet mixing in with the rain. Right now it looks like the best time frame for this happening is between the hours of 4pm-10pm. Otherwise, expect mostly cloudy skies with widespread rain likely this afternoon into the evening hours.

As of the latest forecast information, a change over to wintry precipitation looks UNLIKELY today. As we head through tonight, warmer air will build in from the southeast causing temperatures to actually warm up overnight and cause the precipitation to remain as rain. If there is any change over to sleet later on today, it would occur mainly north of Interstate 20 for only a brief period. As a result, we do not expect any significant wintry precipitation accumulation or major travel problems with this system.

This low pressure system will continue to move up the east coast taking the moisture with it on Thursday. Therefore, expect decreasing chances of rain with highs in the mid to upper 40s Thursday afternoon.

This weekend, a strong blast of Arctic air will invade the deep south causing a VERY COLD weekend. We'll keep you posted on that.

Prepare to stay bundled up outside for the rest of the week!

I am looking out my office window in the Avondale area and it is both sleeting and snowing. Several vehicles have been sliding in the parking lot.
